“It’s an actual home where you can enjoy the space, we couldn’t
make use of the space before to entertain, it wasn’t a social space,
but this is amazing to be able to host and to prepare and enjoy food”
When our clients bought this Victorian two-storey terrace, set in a leafy part of South West London, it was in dire need of a full renovation from head to toe. The brief that we developed closely with them set out to unlock the potential of the existing spaces, to tactically extend without reducing the garden and to retrofit existing elements to improve energy efficiency and comfort levels.
Thanks to an engaged design process and an incredible delivery team, the completed project has delivered everything and more for the clients who can enjoy their home to its maximum potential. It’s cosy but also sociable and flexible, it's naturally lit, comfortable and beautifully crafted.
When opening the front door there is a visual connection inviting you through to the garden. A toilet, utility and cloakroom have been incorporated that cut across the plan defining the snug to the front and kitchen-dining area to the rear. The materiality of the dark zinc standing seam dormer has been brought down and incorporated above the sliding doors of the ground floor extension. This, along with other measures including concealing the soil vent pipe internally, helps to unify and bring calm to the rear elevation of the property. At the end of the garden, a sturdy brick-built shed has been converted into a home office, with the exposed green painted steel beam the only recognisable internal element.
Every single room throughout the house was reconfigured and upgraded. The front door and all windows were replaced apart from one modern double glazed unit that is functioning well. Additional insulation was incorporated to the front and rear elevations, the roof and the ground floor. Underfloor heating has been incorporated throughout the ground floor providing even heat distribution and improved comfort. Pocket sliding doors have been utilised to improve openness and maximise usable space. The existing chimney stacks have been carefully removed throughout to increase usable floor area and allow for easily accessible double bedrooms.
